Human Rights, Environmental Law, and the Earth Charter

Boston Research Center for the 21st Century

(now the Ikeda Center)

Human Rights, Environmental Law, and the Earth Charter summarizes conflicting points of view and strategies for use of language on issues ranging from the Golden Rule to human rights to gender to Earth rights. Derived from a consultation held in 1997, "Practical Steps to Realize Environmental Justice: Drawing on 50 Years of Human Rights Developments," this volume incorporates the views of environmental lawyers, ethicists, scholars, and activists engaged in the worldwide struggle to enforce human rights initiatives. Complete texts of the Benchmark Draft of the Earth Charter and the Draft International Covenant on Environment and Development are included along with recommendations for revisions that strengthen existing language.
